GLOSSARY INQUIRY: SYSTEM
The word “system” refers to any form or process that can be studied through science or other kinds of disciplined inquiry. Three general categories of systems have been identified: simple systems, complicated systems and complex systems.
Each category has its own explanatory principles and methods of study. Complex systems are the most recent category to have been identified and their principles and methods are the focus of much effort across academic disciplines.
Education has been characterized and studied using the principles and methods associated with each type of system.
