GLOSSARY INQUIRY: INFORMATION

Any phenomenon that has the potential to trigger actions or transformations in complex systems.

Information is not something that exists “out there”. Rather, we create it, or interpret it, into the world that we experience. Information only exists in relation to particular organisms, or other complex systems. For example, rocks contain rich information for geologists, vibrations for snakes, scents for dogs, and symbols for readers.

Educationally speaking, information is not something “present” that needs to be grasped by, or transferred to, learners. Information is construed by learners as they make distinctions in their world.
