Center for Ecoliteracy
Established in 1995 by Fritjof Capra, Peter Buckley, and Zenobia Barlow, the Centre for Ecoliteracy draws on complexity science and adopts a living systems perspective in its efforts to support and develop educational networks and multi-disciplinary research. The foci are building sustainable communities and establishing sustainable patterns of living.
Chaos & Complexity Theory – Special Interest Group Website (American Educational Research Association)
This website is a test-bed for ideas that SIG members hope will prove useful to those interested in the intersection of complexity theories and education. Its primary purposes are to inform educational researchers of opportunities and resources and to put key concepts before them.
Complexity Digest
This site provides for a comprehensive archival collection of complexity science related material from academic, scientific, and mainstream media across the world. An invaluable resource for anyone interested in staying informed on emerging complexity science issues. Notably, this site is advertisement free.
Institute for the Study of Coherence and Emergence (ISCE)
ISCE is a non-profit research institution located in Boston and the Netherlands. Its mission is to promote pragmatic dialogue concerning the areas of networking, emergence, and complexity studies. The Institute is responsible for Emergence: Complexity & Organization—A Journal of Research, Theory and Practice on Organizations as Complex Systems, the first issue of which is available for free through the site.
Learning-Theories
Learning is a complex process and learning theories themselves inter-relate in complex ways. This reference is a growing knowledgebase and webliography of important, influential learning theories, instructional design models, and other theories useful for educational researchers and practitioners. There are definitions, summaries, commentary, and other useful links for each theory.
New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI)
An educational and research institution dedicated to advancing the study of complex systems ion a variety of disciplines. Among other things, the site provides an excellent introduction to complex systems theory (follow their “About Complex Systems” link).
Systemics and Education
This site contains information useful for Systemicists interested in educational issues, including email address lists, bibliographies, and so on.
The Plexus Institute
Plexus is a US based institute exploring complexity science applications to promote community and organizational health. Among other features, the site has an excellent online library for members, an extensive webliography, and a well-developed introduction to complexity.
The Santa Fe Institute (SFI)
This site provides access to ongoing multidisciplinary research in the field of emerging science and education. Much of the research that can be accessed on this site is directed towards breaking down traditional barriers that exist between different disciplines. The research papers on the site are a useful resource for individuals who are actively working in the field of complexity science and provide foundations for those who are looking for opportunities for the practical application of complexity science.
Washington Center for Complexity & Public Policy
The Center was established in 2001 in response to the growing interest in complexity science as a framework for understanding and developing public policy. Its portfolio of research and educational topics includes infrastructure protection, strategic intelligence analysis, government services in a networked economy, the economics of climate change, and models for healthcare.
Cybernetics, Systems Theory, and Complexity
A site maintained by the University of Colorado. It contains links to online papers, related web resources, and book reviews.
The Observer Web: Autopoiesis and Enactivism
A site that describes itself as “an internet nexus for the biology of cognition, autopoeitic theory, and enactive cognitive science”. Of particular interest is the encyclopaedia autopoetica, described as a compendium of the terms and concepts used in autopoietic theory, with emphasis on the core literature of Maturana and Varela.
Principia Cybernetica Project
The aim of the project, and the corresponding workshop can be summarized as follows. Principia Cybernetica is an attempt by a group of researchers to collaboratively build a system of cybernetic philosophy, moving towards a transdisciplinary unification of the domain of Systems Theory and Cybernetics.
Nonlinear Dynamics and Complex Systems Theory: Glossary of Terms
An extensive list of terms and concepts associated with complex systems theory.
Web Dictionary of Cybernetics and Systems
This on-line dictionary is actually a combination of several glossaries with a comprehensive set of definitions provided by leading authorities in cybernetics, systems theory, and related domains. Definitions are interlinked and many include mention of prominent theorists. The dictionary is provided as part of Cybernetics and Systems Theory, a hub for centres, associations, and journals devoted to the field.
Society for Chaos Theory
This website was created to help develop an international forum that brings together researchers, theoreticians, and practitioners interested in applying dynamical systems theory, self-organization, neural nets, fractals, cellular automata, agent-based modeling, and related forms of chaos, catastrophes, bifurcations, nonlinear dynamics, and complexity theories to psychology and the life sciences. The website provides excellent educational tutorials on chaos and complexity designed for students and teachers.
